In the comments yesterday, Brian commented that I was long Synpatics even though I knew what was coming. So true. What separates the amateurs – me, from the pro’s – self proclaimed :) – is their ability to flip quickly. I was smart enough to scale out of Synaptics as it rose to $60, but knowing that I knew that the componenet cycle would end like all others, rode a piece down and added more in the low 40′s. A self procalimed pro would have sold and shorted it.

At least I got Akamai right .

Akamai, for all it’s cacheing greatness is a commodity too and the target of major pricing pressures both from competition and it’s customers. That has finally caught up. Yesterday, the rumor was Apple was making noise about Akamai and the stock dropped into the 26′s really fast. I ‘twitted’ that I covered it into the news. I am happy with 10 points, especially fast ones.

I may do this shorting thing a little more when the situation is right.

Any new faves out there? -

The market is the best teacher and drug. As long as you stay in the game you will enjoy a lifetime of lessons.

I put on a short today. Yep. Correct.

Akamai (AKAM).

Yes we’ve Wallstripped Akamai (I was a star at the end of it ) and yes I made a lot of money riding it up on this blog the last few years, but I was stopped out.

It’s obvious why the trend ended. Akamai’s business was just too good. The followers are all in.

It is also in a space where a freaking price war was inevitable and well underway.

I would post some charts, but that would be lamo. I hope Brian can do me a solid and make me a video of the chart so i don’t have to draw all those lines.

I took some size and am using $40 as a stop. I think she will be a teenager next year…or $100 :) . Let’s see what happens.

Disclosure- Short Akamai

Oh man – the bears are just getting rinsed and cleansed. They need to for this market to really start going down. The other thing this market will need to go down is – BAD NEWS THAT PEOPLE CARE ABOUT. It is absolutely giddy out there in stockland. MOOD is what matters.

All that said -

I am still a net seller every day until I get off margin. Just a little everyday here into the middle of January.

I want to enjoy every last leveraged second of this global melt-up since the summer, but let’s be real. I am not a computer and some of these runs are goofy.

I was scooting around the blogosphere this morning at my fave stock blog sites and THE FLY had an interesting post about Akamai. No one believes in Akamai more than me (maybe FLY), but the story is pretty much out. No doubt the institutions can now move this stock to $100, but they can knife this thing to $30 on a whiff of bad news.

It is an age old story – great margins attract competition and those margins slowly go away. Oh and the Akamai Patents you say…GREAT – I can’t invest in the law firms! Trends are great, but money management is still the order of the day to achieving wealth.

My two favorite TIMELY tech stories remain Apple and GPS leader Garmin. If the market continues to rally into earnings – these tech stocks leaders will chug higher. Garmin is really poised..

Disclosure – Long Akamai (net seller), Long Apple and Long Garmin

In tomorrow’s Wallstrip interview with trading guru and Minyanville founder Todd Harrison, one answer stands out to me. He notes that despite the Dow being at all-time highs, the average investor does not feel richer. I agree with him on this view and that we are losing a middle class here. Just a feeling though and don’t have the stats to back it right here.

It is a great interview with a talented man who got to trade in the house of Cramer/Berkowitz. No juicy stories unfortunately from the day!

Over to the market, my Nasdaq four horsemen (RIMM, AAPL, ADBE, GOOG) have been hammered the last few days, albeit from extremely lofty levels. It has been a while since I noticed them all moving down like this.

Adobe is absolutely the weakest of my “horsemen” and did not hold it’s all-time high breakout from a few weeks back. It is on CODE RED (double secret probation), but I am doing nothing with my position.

On the bright side, no weakness for one of my faves Akamai. Nothing stops this stock. I own a little still and every time I get tired of looking at it and think about selling it, it climbs back and hits 52 week highs – today included. The life time chart of this stock is – in the words of Blair – STAGGERING!.

It was worthy of one of my fave Wallstrip shows despite it not being near an all-time high.

No way it’s possible to financially value this stock at $53, but that’s Wall Street.

This has been one of my most written about trend stocks in my blog. Here is an excerpt from a post I wrote on March 26:

Cache is king – and the Motley Fools

In the real world, cash is king. In the internet world, CACHE as in CACHEING is king.

Inktomi was probably a great deal for Yahoo if Akamai’s price is for real.

I first bought Akamai at $15 after looking deeper into the Apple story and iTunes in particular. It seemed simple enough – their cacheing software sped up the net. Today I am also hungry for ideas that will speed the move to voice recognition and solve language barriers – but I digress.

I further read the good research on the Motley Fool. I mean I loved Apple at the time (2 years ago already). The Motley Fool “rules” – that price does not matter for “Rule Breakers” and that community is valuable – have been fanatstic for them. Of course, they have had some serious flameouts as well – but that goes with the territory they are writing about.

I have no idea what AKAMAI is worth, but the customer list is growing and until Apple changes partners, this little baby still has legs. Video only increase the importance for now.

This may be a little different than the hardware component makers like Sigmatel, Synaptics and Portal Player where margin compression and vendor changes fluctuate daily. The hardware component stcoks have great runs and than get cut in half. This happened to me in Synaptics – the cool iPod click wheel supplier.

Today Akamai trades at $50. I have sold down my position, but am sill riding this trend. I have no idea who will kick them off their perch and their stock acts like nobody is close. It has been pretty smooth sailing the last 12 months. I traded some around one of their dips.

Disclosure – Ling Akamai – not buying more

No joking.

If I was a competitor to Google, I would stop freaking out over YouTube (mini tsunami), because you may miss the REAL TSUNAMI.

I don’t know the order of acquisition, but if I was in charge of Google, I would be going for the FREAKING JUGULAR of TECH and the Consumer.

1. To keep people scratching their heads I would do a quick swallow of Zillow – JAB, JAB, CROSS! Zillow gives Google an entry into the biggest consumer market and YouTube gives Zillowers a chance to quicly put a tour up with all the facts. Throw in some personal touches and get the buyer out to see your home, with directions from Google and all the facts from Zillow.

2.3. and 4. 5. and 6. can all be announced on the same day. Apple, RIMM, Ebay, Akamai and Adobe.

Take a big picture of all the CEO’s flipping off AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo, News Corp, Diller and the Justice Department on the front lawn of GoogleCity USA :) .

Apple would likely have been hostile a few months back, but with Schmidt on Apple’s board, the SEED is in place. The rest get their huge payday and go away if they don’t want to play.

To ensure the deals go through – BUY TASER and arm the employees and LOCKHEED MARTIN to protect the Googleplex or Googleville.

What the hell – after taking a few weeks off, BUY PHILLIP MORRIS and shut it the fuck down so that people live long enough to enjoy all the toys! BUT – make sure you push through legalized marijuana. Let’s face it. How much more fun would surfing the web and YouTube be. Shit, you may not even have to buy Akamai, because the web will seem fast enough.

PS – I would than buy Chipotle’s because you need to feed eveybody :) !

PPS or PSS – Owning Sanofi – maker of Ambien – may be a little tuck in so that we could control everyone’s sleep habits. BUT THAT’S IT!

PPSS or PSSP or whatever – The new guys will be chirping about buying an airline. NEVER buy an airline. It would kill everything :) .

Flash and Speed are the winners in the video age. This deal just amplifies it by 10.

Sweet for Akamai and Adobe

Disclosure – Long Akamai and Adobe.

This could be one hell of a week in MEDIA.

If Google is really chasing YouTube (they should), rest assured that this weekend saw huge firings at News Corp, all-night meetings with bankers and all kinds of backstabbings (always a silver lining :) )

If there is a deal and it isn’t firm, the price should be bid well north of $2 billion. I read nothing new and of interest on the subject until tonight.Hedge fund Old Timer and wily veteran Jeff Matthews, who is known for his skeptical look at everything Wall Street, has a great post on the subject. Read it. My favorite part:

The issue I take is this: YouTube is no mere “front door for web visits” by teenagers surfing the web.

Rather, YouTube is the Next TV.

Before you spit out your coffee, or Jamba Juice, or chai tea, or soy latte at that grand statement, consider for a moment what is happening here.

People watch more than one hundred million videos on YouTube every day. Since YouTube accounted for just under half of all visits to U.S. online video sites in September, more than two hundred million videos are viewed every day on U.S. video sites, including YouTube, MySpace, Google and others.

Nobody writes better or funnier on Wall Street than Jeff.

PS – Is it any wonder that AKAMAI keeps climbing. Speed Wins in all scenarios these days!

Disclosure – Long Akamai. Should be long Google (no intentions here). Wish I was long YouTube :) .

My bottomfish Ebay has now crossed $30 for the first time in 3 months and no one believes. Good.

Akamai passes $52.

Rimm is near $110

Doesn’t matter.

Did not sleep worrying about my Anglian account. I m making calls to get a picture of my client’s investment. I see another letter in my inbox – this one from Vega Plus:

VegaPlus Letter.pdf

Big Woop. All the letters won’t make up for the calls Julian has had with the manageres at my account. I will find out today I imagine.

To throw acid on my wound I am watching CNBC in the hope of some news -ya right. Instead, “Pat” from Saturday Night Live (Abby Joseph Cohen) was babbling about Dow 1 billion.

One of my favorite market and stock bloggers is back and has a good reason for why he went dark. Congrats. You should read him.

Could not agree more and have been putting my money where my mouth is the last few years. I hope to keep doing so.

That is a cheesy headline.

It’s the Jewish New year so I can start with some Cream Cheese.

I like Video, I have talked endlessly about it. I like buying strength and have talked endlessly about that. Today both those themes worked beautifully.

Apple, Adobe, Akamai and Webx were all up 3-8 percent – just today.

Obviously that won’t continue forever and these are risky stocks, it is just that I like the market here and owning the strongest stocks coming out of a summer of weakness has paid quick, fast, large dividends.

I was bludgeoned this morning in OIL – but BTU and the oil index closed on the highs so they look washed out. I will be adding tomorrow and some more gold calls and I will be stopping out below today’s lows.

Here is some great Adobe linkage and insight courtesy of tech nerd Om Malik and somebody new to me Tom Keating . I may need to get an Adobe tattoo to go with the inevitable Apple tattoo – assuming my reformed jewish cemetary would still have me :) .

UPDATE – more data on my oil trade from DeGraaf. More clues that I use in a countertrend trade.
