Lifelock – A Word on the Gossip

I have an angel investment in Lifelock that I have talked about on this blog. Our venture firm Biltmore Ventures was an investor in the latest round with Kleiner Perkins and Bessemer.

This past week, the online tech gossip columns have enjoyed some negative press accounts about Lifelock . David Cowan of Bessemer does a better job than I could weighing in on the gossip .

With respect to whether you can trust Lifelock, David says:

As a veteran investor of Verisign, Postini, Counterpane, Cyota and several other security service providers, I know what a challenge it is to overcome the suspicions raised by sensational journalism, and the allegations of competitors who covet success. Lifelock embraces every practice we can to operate transparently and in the best interest of the customer–including ISO 27001 certification of our call center and data infrastructure–and surely we still have many lessons yet to learn. But even when we do, we will always have to endure conspiracy theories.

Mike Arrington of TechCrunch has chosen to carefully craft a post that implies me being accused of some bad things as it relates to Lifelock and the recent gossip. It’s just wrong, a lie and a real sloppy, shitty thing to do (but definitely premeditated). He obviously has a bone to pick with me and is thinking of me often. I thought he hit a new low a few weeks back , but as with most new lows, they tend to go lower.

  • You're welcome, and maybe you're right.

If you ever want to have a real conversation, let me know. You're also in Phoenix, right? In any case, I'll be interested to read your future writings.

  • Thankis Ray - wonderful story but an even better product and a great business.
  • As you can read from the comments on the Arrington blog on the "hit job" on LifeLock, the rumors of a conspiracy against LifeLock have been dispelled.
Arrington's evidence of a "dossier" he received with negative info about LifeLock was also received by me AFTER my article was published, and it contained almost nothing I hadn't found out on my own. It also contained almost nothing that can't be found easily on the Internet. The fact is, folks at LifeLock, investor David Cowan and others who knew about Maynard's past must have known it would only be a matter of time before someone Googled Maynard.
But the LifeLock story is not about the distant past. Their marketing has included this bogus identity theft story of Maynard's, a story that has been told recently by officers of the company. Was that the result of bipolar disorder?
Also, there are many questions for David Cowan that are still unanswered, but he won't return e-mails. He also posted a whitewashing column on his Who Has Time For This blog, but for some reason when I post my questions to his comments section, they don't get published. One question is why AZ Corporation Commission records show Maynard as Chief Operating Officer of LifeLock, but Cowan claims in his blog that Maynard wasn't an officer when the investment was made. What is the real story there? Did Cowan know the "victim" story Maynard and Davis were telling wasn't true?
Thanks for regurgitating Cowan's whitewash in your blog, Lindzon. What's so wrong with putting some hard questions to LifeLock and Cowan instead of blowing them all the time? Lindzon, do you have any sort of monetary interest in LifeLock?
  • Ok, I give up.

Mike...whatever. Read the email from your employee to me. Class act. Congrats on the wonderfull staff.

Also, I don't troll, thanks for coming to my site and leaving that morsel. I call it baiting.
  • ISO Security? Haha...

  • ok, I went back and read your post and all the updates. First, it looks like you and Duncan have some sort of problem. I never had any problem with you and still don't really. I hope this all works out for the best. I admire what Lifelock is doing, I think it was a good investment. WallStrip isn't my thing but you drove it to a nice liquidity event and that's great. Good luck with future projects.
  • I frankly have no real idea what happened with the wallstrip post on TC, since your comment was removed before I read it. I asked some friends at CBS to see if they could tell me how I offended you and to help mend fences. All Duncan says is that you were trolling.

WRT the post on Lifelock, I actually included you, and the other guys, to show that there was a serious conspiracy against the company. I think that if your opinion wasn't so tainted against me right now you would have read it that way. I certainly have no reason to believe that you have done anything wrong at lifelock. From what I gather, neither has the CEO or Maynard.

If all you want to do is pick a fight, ok. Join the line. If you want to work this out, send me an email. I repeat that I have nothing against you. I really don't even know you.
  • I'm having a difficult time understanding the point of Duncan's comment.

Frankly, I don't think it's any of our damn business who private citizens or companies invest in. If you or Bessimer want to take this particular risk, more power to you, but still, the spin is getting a little dizzying. i.e. Just about any company can get ISO 27001 certification. Maybe lifelock was the "first" who happened to get the upgraded product the month it was released. (Hey, I was one of the first to get the new 42 cent stamps). Millions of companies get ISO certification. You pay for it, jump through the hoops, and get it. And how did Manyard make it in the Marines with untreated bi-polar disorder - apparently bad enough to lead him to do the things he did? I’m not minimizing the seriousness of the disorder or anyone who has it. Quite the contrary. It just seems odd.
  • Howard Lindzon
thanks duncan. I had heard the same rumor, but chose not to post.

Libel-avoidance 101: Craft the story as if you are debunking the malicious statements, but leave your argument weak in order to actually add credibility to the libelous statements.

Example: I have recently been handed some very convincing documentation from a couple of unnamed sources that Mike Arrington is actually the Duke rapist. Obviously, these sources are incorrect because they are from Duke University Party Planning and I haven't been there....so it is highly unlikely that in fact, Mike Arrington is the Duke rapist. Beyond that, when sources tell me that Mike Arrington is the Duke rapist, something doesn't register, because if he was the Duke rapist, it would probably not be information fed directly to me with photos, PDFs and videos of the rape, but rather on a billboard somewhere which would say in very bold letters that Mike Arrington is the Duke rapist.

Always close strong. Dan Rather was king of this when discussing conservatives.... "I'm sorry for my incorrect fact finding before saying that Bush _________".
